Chapter 7
John left Sherlock in his bed before dawn, not wanting to accidentally wake him and have him asking questions about why his flatmate was sitting in his bed, stroking his hair.
Sherlock slept in late and John used the time to refine his plan. He had a little notebook he always carried around, because writing things down helped him to organize his thoughts. And it was safe from Sherlock.
Privacy was something unknown when you lived with the world’s only consulting detective, as John had discovered only two days after moving in. Sherlock had barged into the bathroom holding John’s laptop in his hands, the shock causing his fingers to tighten on the soap, which promptly flew from his grasp and ended up lodged behind the toilet.
“John, have a look at this.”
“That is MY laptop.”
“Yes.”
“It was in my bedroom.”
“Yes.”
Clearly Sherlock was not seeing a problem here.
“What were you doing in my bedroom?”
“Oh, I needed to borrow one of your socks for an experiment.”
John grinned thinking about that morning a few months ago and turned back to his notebook. He needed to find the right trigger for Sherlock to remember and he would start with one of the simplest: jealousy. It had worked perfectly on two or three occasions, especially that one time during the French Revolution.
Though Sherlock had said girlfriends were not his area and John suspected he might be gay, he himself had lived this life as a straight man and thought it might be easier at the moment to chat up a woman. If that didn’t help, he’d try a man.
He really hoped one of these would work and he would not have to bring the big guns in...
He heard Sherlock get up and turned his attention to the job adverts in the newspaper.
Oh, there was a surgery looking for a doctor, that didn't sound too bad.
The next Tuesday, which already started badly for John, Sherlock dragged him on a case offered by an old fellow student. They visited him in his posh bank building and John immediately disliked him. He liked taking his money though.
A short cab ride later Sherlock was balcony jumping and breaking into the flat of the first suspect, just to find his body. The killer seemed to be a ghost, because the door was locked from the inside. And Lestrade was out of town. The day was getting better and better.
That evening Sherlock was in a very bad mood and kept muttering to himself while typing furiously on his laptop. John decided to leave him alone and went to bed early. He needed to catch up on sleep anyway.
The following day he went to the job interview at the surgery and fate was on his side, because the woman interviewing him seemed to be interested in him. Her name was Sarah and she appeared to be nice and normal. Chances were good that Sherlock would dislike her immediately.
John thought that he had been rather lucky, because now there was no need to visit bars in the evening hoping to find someone he could pretend to be in love with. He decided that he would try to invite her on a date the following week.
Back at the flat Sherlock was busy thinking, still trying to figure out the cipher. John used the opportunity to hint at the woman, because he knew that if he waited for a moment where Sherlock was not distracted he’d immediately see through the lie.
Instead he just raised an eyebrow and turned back to the problem at hand. John forgot about Sarah the next instant too, because Sherlock said in that deep velvety voice, the one that never failed to make John’s knees go weak, “Here, have a look.”
Then John read the article about another man being murdered by the ghost, they went to see Lestrade's reluctant substitute, visited the dead man’s flat and the library and found another of the yellow ciphers.
He did not think about his plan or Sarah on the following days, because everything seemed to happen at once.
The day after the finding of the second body was memorable because Sherlock admitted that he needed advice and John got arrested for anti-social behaviour.
After another whirl of activity they spent the evening and a better part of the night searching the tube and railway tunnels for more of the ciphers. When John discovered a whole host of them, found Sherlock and brought him back to the now freshly painted wall, he felt deeply disappointed and confused.
That was nothing compared to the shock he felt when Sherlock suddenly grabbed his head and told him to close his eyes. John’s thoughts were running amok. ‘Oh God, is he going to kiss me? Why would he kiss me now? What the hell does that matter? Please kiss me now!’
It took some time for him to realize that he was dizzy because Sherlock was turning him around and that Sherlock was talking. Talking about the stupid ciphers. In a second John was back to disappointment again.
At least Sherlock seemed impressed that he managed to get a picture of the wall.
The following evening they were back at the museum, hoping to save the next potential victim. Unfortunately, the killer wasn't far behind and when the lights went out, John’s soldier training kicked in. He dragged the innocent girl to safety while Sherlock dashed off in pursuit.
Waiting in the dark, John’s training battled with his instincts. He could not just sit here and do nothing while Sherlock might be in danger. But he could not leave the girl alone either.
As soon as he heard the first shot, nothing could have stopped him from going after Sherlock. He told the girl to close the door then he stormed out. The shooting was still going on and when he came to the gallery he saw Sherlock’s coat disappear around a corner.
John exhaled in relief that Sherlock was still unharmed and started to follow. It was difficult to find him in the exhibitions though. At some point he heard shooting again and Sherlock shouting, not in pain but more indignant. And then nothing...
BANG!
A single shot. John felt that this was a shot that had found its target. His heart almost stopped and he closed his eyes for a second. Then he ran towards the origin of the sound.
The depot was absolutely silent. The only sound was the panicked voice in John’s head. ‘God, no, please no, not Sherlock, please.’ His breathing became ragged when he saw the outline of a body on the ground and he nearly cried with relief when he realized that it was the girl.
Luckily Sherlock had followed the killer so that John had time to pull himself together before he returned and he suppressed the urge to throw himself in Sherlock’s arms when he came back into the room.
But he was not able to leave Sherlock out of his sight for the next hours, which worked out well since Sherlock needed John to help him sort through crates of books the whole night anyway.
The first time John remembered Sarah and his stupid plan again was when his alarm went off after a night full of work and lack of sleep. Damn, he had to start on his new job today!
He managed to leave the surgery with an upcoming date, despite falling asleep in his office. His charm really must have been enormous for Sarah to not only take over his patients, but also virtually begging him for a date. John felt rather bad, because she was nice and he hated that he had to use her that way.
When he came home from the surgery, Sherlock stood in the middle of their absolutely chaotic living room in his purple shirt and with ruffled hair, making John almost lose his train of thought.
For a moment he considered giving up on his plan in favour of making Sherlock remember by grabbing him and kissing him until they both ran out of breath.
The announcement of his date did not have the impact he was hoping for, but really, that would have been far too easy.
The date itself went remarkably poorly, beginning with Sherlock barging in on it and starting a brawl at the circus, followed by awkward talking when the two of them were alone and ending in a kidnapping and a near death situation. Surprisingly enough Sarah did not flat out refuse another date.
They met again after a few days and Sherlock was completely disinterested. John had the feeling that this was not going to help him get Sherlock to remember. He needed another trigger.
Which meant that he had to bring in the bigger guns. He focused on stage two of his plan.

AN: So I just decided that I will finish this story in two more chapters. There will be a conclusion coming up in the next one! *yay*
Because this still needs some work and because of the new plot bunny there will be no new chapter next week, but I have another installment of the follow-up for the blowjob 221B for you. Stay tuned!

Date: 2011-06-30 03:03 pm (UTC)John, lovely John... It's so sad that he had to come out of Sherlock's bedroom, but at least he had a plan. I loved the plan, not that I expected it to work, but it seemed a little naive and I'm glad he chose to try that first. Now I'm wondering if that's what John was trying to achieve in TBB (I'm just going to say it was and ignore anyone who says otherwise).
I really loved to read that scene from TBB, but in this universe. I loved possessive and worried John who refused to let Sherlock out of his sight. It's good to know John has a new plan and, since he described it as 'the bigger guns', I can't wait to see what he'll come up with. Do I see a certain pool in the future? I'll just nervously grind my teeth until in find out.
I don't know what you've done to me, I had never been that excited about blowjobs in my life before. Now, every time you mention a follow up to the 221B, I want to scream YAY BLOWJOBS! I won't try to kill the fandom by blue-balling everyone this time, I swear. I just want more blowjobs (is that what Sherlock said?).

Date: 2011-06-30 05:18 pm (UTC)And of course that was what he was trying to do in TBB as well, how can anyone say otherwise???
Uhohm the pool... Yes, I think I see it too. *angst*
I nearly died at the blowjob comment. As long as you don't do it in public, that might be awkward. *lol*

Date: 2011-06-30 06:25 pm (UTC)Oh no! The evil pool of evilness! Now I can't stop thinking about what could happen, when (if) Sherlock will figure it out and how it will affect him. I have hypotheses. If John was anxious when Sherlock ran after a criminal alone in this part, I wonder how he'll feel when (if) Sherlock organizes a secret rendezvous with Moriarty. Alone. Does Moriarty know? If he involved?
Must. Think. About. Something. Else.
YAY BLOWJOBS!
