Let sleeping doctors lie

God, he was so tired!

They had been up for almost 36 hours straight, though John managed to take a two-hour nap after the first day. Sherlock didn’t even do that, but he also didn’t need to do it. He was on fire, bustling about between several experiments in his lab and the morgue where Molly was helping her boss do the autopsy.

Lestrade was sitting next to him looking as tired as he felt.

John had never seen a corpse turn green before so he was actually quite curious about the hopefully soon upcoming results. Still, he was so very tired.

When he dropped something he was supposed to hand to Sherlock for the third time, his partner snapped.

“Just take something to keep you awake, John. You’re no help to me in this condition.”

“No, dammit.”

Confused by that sudden - and in their opinion unjustified - outburst, both men turned around to look at John. Only Sherlock was looking at John. Reading him. Deducing him.

“Oh. You. Yes, of course. Like almost every dedicated young doctor. What did you take?”

“Methylphenidate. I was young and stupid. But I wanted to help people so very badly. It was hard to let go of that habit.”

“I’m close to a solution. This’ll soon be over.”

John yawned.

“It'd better be.”

AN:
Today's prompt was 'drugs'.

Methylphenidate is a stimulant. I have no idea if that’s what doctors would take, but I know of students who do to stay awake and be more focused.

Uh uh... so, our nice doctor has had his own little drug problem.

And it’s quite a twist for today’s prompt – the obvious choice would have been Sherlock’s past.

Well, ‘obvious’ and ‘Anarion’ just don’t fit, do they :D

I can definitely believe that doctors (particularly students and residents) would take Methylphenidat(e? - I think it's supposed to have an e) to stay awake. It's easily accesible and does the job, though, as John unfortunately learned, it can be quite addictive. I'd be leering (whoops, Freudian slip! LOL) leery of taking anything stronger than caffeine if I was him, too.

Of course I read the prompt and thought, "Sherlock". But, of course again, it couldn't be Sherlock's drug addiction, it'd have been too obvious and Anarion DOESN'T DO obvious. :D Your version is very credible. The title is funny and the original proverb goes well with the story, you clever girl!

It's "Methylphenidate", unless Sherlock is showing off and wants to prove he's quite fluent in German. Also, shouldn't it be “It'd better be.”? :-)

my most favorite kind.

"I was young and stupid. But I wanted to help people so very badly"
Aaaand happy dancing stopped 'cause *sob*.

As Chocolamousse said, Anarion doesn't do obvious. I love this because it makes perfect sense and it's in character for both of them. God I'm so happy you're doing this, it's magical to watch this universe of yours fill out, I really, really, really do love it.

Oh, that was clever and definitely something new (or at least I haven't read something like that about John before) - but of course, he is entitled to a troubled drug-past, too.

Vitamin P, aka Provigil, aka modafinil was pretty popular among my med school classmates, that and phentermine... When quad-venti-lattes aren't enough! I love how Sherlock saw and understood and didn't push.
