Today's prompt: grave

Forever
He knew instantly what the inscription was going to say: Now. Always.
John takes his eyes of the window display and walks into the jeweller’s shop.
He doesn’t need the ring. He is sure of his love for Sherlock and of Sherlock’s love for him. He doesn’t need to mark Sherlock (except for the marks that no one will see) but he knows that Sherlock is possessive and sometimes insecure and will therefore want to have ‘his’ ring on John’s finger for everyone to see.
And he will need a ring on his finger for himself to see. That John loves him and will always love him.
The jeweller, a tiny, bald old man, asks him what kind of woman his fiancée is. John explains and ignores the old man’s responding raised eyebrow he gets.
Of course it’s not going to be a real wedding. It’s not legal in the UK after all.
But the ceremony, the saying it in front of a registrar, is not the important part of this.
It’s the gesture of telling Sherlock that he wants to be with him now and forever. He is not going to leave ever again.
John smiles and pockets the slim white gold rings.
Because though Sherlock thinks he sees and knows everything in this regard he is strangely blind.

Today's prompt was 'grave'.
AN: ‘grave’ is an archaic form of ‘engrave’. I chose to read the prompt that way because everything else would have been dark and sad. And I needed to finish what I started yesterday anyway. :)

Always rang a bell and I had the feeling that you used these words before, that somehow they were important in your canon, and I was even certain that I had mentioned them in the "Hey I've read all your fics at last and they're great" PM I send you six months ago. So I had I look at my inbox and look what I found about The Essence of Love in this PM: "I love "Now. Always" too, perfect words to engrave on their rings if someday you write a fic in which they get married !" Great minds think alike! :D I still think they're perfect.
As is the whole fic. So sweet and tender and moving and romantic and just awww. I'd very much like to see Sherlock's reaction now!

It occurred to me the other day that there are probably a lot of people walking around with wedding rings that are invisible, intangible, because that's all their governments will allow. As in the case of some elderly neighbors I once had, some of those rings are the most permanent.
