He used to be alone all his life. Distant parents, a sibling he had a difficult relationship with (and the age difference didn’t help).

People called him a ‘loner’.

Most of the time he was fine with it. He was content being on his own because it was easier and people didn’t understand what was going on in his head anyway. He was the odd one in school, the one boys beat up and girls overlook.

It changed when he went to university. Suddenly people took notice because he was good at what he did.

Still, he didn’t have anything he’d call ‘friends’. He had mates and varying partners, only to discover that having sex does not mean being close to someone. He was still alone.

In the army the comrades you live with know everything about you. How you smell, what you look like when you sleep, when you’re angry, or afraid. You trust them with your life. You bond. You laugh together. You cry together. And he was still alone. Because knowing all about someone doesn’t mean knowing them.

Then he met another lonely soul, crouched over a microscope in a lab, and like a negative times a negative is a positive they suddenly both weren’t alone any more. It only took a blink.

Until you mentioned the army, I honestly still think you were writing Sherlock. (Although the partners did make me suspicious. Yup. Wasn't sure whether you were going for not-virgin-Sherlock-even-before-he-met-John.) This is just..woah. The parallel between John and Sherlock always makes me weepy for them, somehow. Lovely.

People always think Sherlock was the lonely one, but they forget about John. He even says so in the RF episode.

Oh, and my head canon is not-virgin-Sherlock-even-before-he-met-John, in case you wanted to know. Or not. *hahaha*
Because I see him as way too curious to not try things out.

Yeah, people tend to go- hey, John managed to snag himself a couple of girlfriends, so he couldn't be that bad. But you actually can feel lonely even when surrounded by people. Huh, so yay to you for delving deeper in that!

Hehe it's always a treat to know another person's headcanon!
As for myself, I can actually see both situations playing out- either Sherlock's too curious or he just couldn't be bothered. I usually tend to lean more on him being curious, though. Or just because it's easier to imagine him being a devil in bed rather than a blushing virgin *cough*

I'm feeling clever that I realized this was John even before the army mention. I said to myself, "Self, this might look like it's Sherlock's musings, but this is anarion we're talking about here, so I'm betting this is actually John." GO ME! LOL

I have to admit to being a fan of the twisty, it's-not-what-it-seems writing device. The (very, very, VERY) few times I've written fanfic, I've used it myself. Anyway...this completely makes sense to me. How does John put up with/understand/care about Sherlock? They're far more alike than most people realize. John is/was equally as alone as Sherlock (which he says himself in TRF), he just hides it better. Together, they are no longer lonely. Together, they are FANTASTIC. :)

You fooled me. Again. Everything said "Sherlock", especially with the quote from The Reichenbach Fall at the beginning. I needed the mention of the army to understand. Gosh, you're strong! From now on I'll read your fics with a "Look out! It's Anarion!" warning in mind. And awww for the last paragraph. Clever AND sweet, I love that!

About the title: if you google "'I was alone until you found me' Sherlock" all you get is "ANARION!!!" :D

Clever stuff... very clever stuff! Nice insight into John - it's easy to overlook his idiosyncrasies when he's standing next to Sherlock, but they are very much there. Lovely.
