The Woes of Wooing

Sherlock never understood the thing with the flowers. Watching Lestrade buy them for his wife (stupid, she was cheating on him again), he gave the topic a few seconds of thought.

Why would a selection of cut off plant ends symbolise someone’s love? You can enjoy their fragrance and colours for a short period of time and then watch them wither and die. How is that for symbolism?

He turned his attention back to the case.

When he finally (yes, for someone this clever it took him an embarrassingly long time to figure it out) realised that he wanted John for more than a friend, he suddenly remembered that day.

He felt strange (and very much out of his depths) when he carried his present to John up the stairs of 221B. He felt strange (and very much out of his depths) and stupid when John – without even blinking in surprise – shook his head.

“No.”

“No?”

“No. I’m glad we are finally on the same page here, but flowers aren’t you. You want to woo me? (Yes, he said woo me.) Come up with your own way.”

Sherlock’s answering grin would have scared any normal person but John just smiled back, because what Sherlock would come up with would be exciting, crazy, possibly illegal and so much better than any bouquet.

AN: Welcome to my '365 days of 221Bs' challenge. I will write a 221B each day, for a year, following a prompt by [livejournal.com profile] atlinmerrick.
I will make a weekly post to the comm because I don't want to spam the list.

Today's prompt was 'flowers'.

This is perfection.

Again.

Sometimes you scare me. How can you take one word and turn it into the perfect Story?

For some reason 221Bs and one-word-prompts work well for me. Much better than long and multi-chaptered stories. *sighs*

I am glad that you like it! :)

I took a break from writing up my assignment to find this. Every single time I read your work, I'm always amazed on how you can magic a meager 221 words to a simply perfect story. Thank you!! :)

I love that he *rejects* the gift. That's the exact opposite of what I expected. And that he said woo. I can hear John saying woo. And that Sherlock grins—god I can see that grin and *hear* the wheels turning in that brilliant brain.

LOVELY. As always, as ever.

I'm deeply depressed. *is deeply depressed* I've just realized that when you'll post your 365th and last 221B we'll have to wait another months before the third series airs. *sighs* BUT your '365 days of 221Bs' challenge will certainly help me to wait, and this first 221B is a very lovely beginning for your challenge as well as for their relationship.

Sherlock can't understand how giving flowers can be seen as a pledge of love but he thinks it will please John, so in order to please John he does something he finds illogical, irrational and trite, which is, from him, a great pledge of love. Er, does it make sense? :D In a word, Sherlock and your fic are adorable, as is John using the word woo. Here, some flowers for you too, to thank and encourage you! :-)

Hmm. I recently read that somewhere but I'm unable to find the article again. It was probably only speculation anyway. But look, I'm going to deduce. Since Beryl Vertue said that the third series would start filming in early 2013(http://www.bbc.co.uk/ariel/17350954), and given that the second series was filmed from May to August 2011 and aired in January, I guess the third series won't air before the end of summer 2013 at the earliest. So, another months after the 365th 221B. Argh, I'm deeply depressed again. I'm going to read your new 221B to cheer me up! :D

The ways of "Woes of Wooing" are wise. You are a whiz.

Please excuse me; my relatives were here all day and now my brain makes a rattling noise when I walk.

Like Atlin, I love that John says, "No" here. He may be saying no to the flowers, but he's saying yes to Sherlock as he really is, and that's much more romantic.

Will we ever find out which is the Sherlockian way of wooing? :)

I thought I'd commented on this one... must be going bonkers!

I love it. Can't cope with flowers, myself, never know what to do with them. Apparently this makes me cheap to keep :D

I love potted plants, but bouquets? They just wither and die and make me sad.

I really like this one!

“No. I’m glad we are finally on the same page here, but flowers aren’t you. You want to woo me? (Yes, he said woo me.) Come up with your own way.”

I love those lines!
