221Bee

Sherlock is unable to sleep. He gets out of bed and walks downstairs to check on his last experiment. But it is still too early, he is gaining nothing except the smell of chemicals on his skin, which will probably piss off John.

He walks over to the window and looks down on the dark and deserted street. His eyes fall on a small dead insect lying on the windowsill.

It makes him think about the conversation they had a few days ago, about his dream of a cottage with a garden and bee-keeping. John teased him that he probably was the only person who would chose a hobby that made him face hundreds of armed opponents.

He looks at the striped cadaver again and sadness sweeps over him. What if John won’t be there anymore to share the dream? What if he got fed up with Sherlock and all the danger surrounding them? What if he left?

These are unfamiliar, unwanted thoughts and suddenly he yearns for John. He goes back upstairs, where he crawls in bed.

John makes a small muffled sound. ‘Mhm, you smell nice.’

‘Like what?’

‘Danger.’ Sherlock can hear the smile in his voice.

He pulls him close and Sherlock lets John’s warmth and smell and touch chase away the sad image of the dead bee.
