The City On The Edge of Forever

“Here, let me help and get that for you.”

“I can manage to carry those few files on my own just fine, Lestrade.”

“Easy, tiger...”

***

“Sherlock, dear, let me help you with the tea tray.”

“Mrs Hudson! Go away.”

“Oh my...” She tiptoed away.

***

“Come on, let me help you with the shower.”

“Why does everyone suddenly think I am as helpless as an infant?”

“Because you fell from the bus, idiot, and managed to break three of your ribs.”

“That means that I am in pain, not helpless. If I hear ‘Let me help’ one more time, I will not be accountable for my actions.”

“What does that sentence mean for you?”

“What?”

“Why do you have such a negative reaction to it?”

“Because it means that others pity me and think I’m incapable. And weak.”

“That’s bullshit.”

Sherlock tilted his head and looked at John. He was intrigued.

“Why, what does it mean for you?”

“It means that people love you. It means that I love you. I want to make things easier for you because you’re in pain. And your pain hurts me.”

“Oh.” Sherlock looked like his world-view just shifted slightly (it probably did).

John sighed.

“So, will you let me help?”

“Yes, John.”

When Sherlock got up, he looked touched. And still rather baffled.

Next 221b: Out of control

AN:
Today's prompt was 'Star Trek/ Spock'.

As much as Stacey was probably hoping for Sherlock/Spock (just because of that tiny Freudian slip...), I decided to fill a Make Me A Monday prompt that I promised to fill ages ago:
"Let me help." A hundred years or so from now, I believe, a famous novelist will write a classic using that theme. He'll recommend those three words even over 'I love you'." Quote from 'The City On The Edge of Forever'. [That's a Star Trek episode for anybody who is confused now]
Sorry, Stacey.

I was delighted that I understood why you titled this "City on the Edge of Forever," and then I was delighted because this was beautiful.

I didn't get the 'let me help' Trek reference, because it's about 30 years since I saw that episode, but I LOVE what you've done with it.

Also, I would like to volunteer to help Sherlock with his shower at any time. Among other activities.

I didn't get the Star Trek reference but the sentiment and the execution were so delightful I don't think it matters.
These 221B's are wonderful, darling, and they just keep getting better. Oh and verityburns will have to help Sherlock with his next shower, I'm already dealing with his current one *grins and wanders back to the bathroom*

I don't remember that Star Trek episode, but your story was sweet as the whole milky-way :)

*sighs* Sherlock AND Star Trek! My fandoms are totally bleeding into each other a lot lately.

Love baffled-by-John Sherlock.

I loved it :)

This is just perfect. How could I be annoyed by such sweetness.
I'm sitting here having a coffee and getting strange looks because I am smiling like the Cheshire Cat. Next perhaps - The Trouble with Tribbles?

I didn't get the Star Trek reference because I'm rather philistine as for the TV series but I enjoyed the fic very much all the same. I like the way everyone tries to help Sherlock one's way and how John proves he's the best of psychologists as regards Sherlock. I like the way you talked about Sherlock's emotional problems about accepting help in Button Up and I still like it in this fic.

“Come on, let me help you with the shower.”
What Verity said!

And your pain hurts me.
This is a beautiful definition of love.

Yes, I know, no need to insist, I got it now, you don't do crossovers! :D

It's "it means that others pity me! :-)

Oh my,(*sniffles*, sorry allergies.)you take a star trek/spock prompt and give us a little heartbreaker of a character study.(*sigh*)
That really would be the way Sherlock sees offers of help.(just transport you know.)
"What does that sentence mean to you?"
"What?"
"Why do you have such a negative reaction to it?"
"Because it means that others pity me and think I'm incapable.
And weak."(ow,ow,ow and *sniffle* 'cause I can hear it said bluntly, just statement of fact. Go you! with the voices and dialog.)

I love your John(shifting Sherlock's world view since 2010!)really, truly from "That's bullshit." to(*sniffle* okay,so not allergies)
"So, will you let me help?" and it leaves me touched as well.
Thank You.
Also tags: star trek, this is not a crossover.(don't care.)Star Trek!is gleefull and willing to pretend.

Don't get me started on fandoms bleeding into each other. Most of it is BC's fault. *pouts*

*flails* I am a TOS fan and have been for, hum, maybe 20 years, and OMG that that episode *flails some more*
AND Sherlock's reaction to "Let me help" is all *flails so much she falls from a bus* I do exactly the same: I once (I should say almost, but I really, really reacted strongly AND badly) bit a boyfriend's head off because he opened a door for me and I was struggling with the key, the lock and an armload of stuff. Needless to say, he wasn't John Watson :-p
